My story: After playing in a 5/10NL game and cashing out at the cage, I was walking around with a good chunk of cash in my pocket and I went to a store and gave the cashier a $100 bill (the old design, not the new colorful one), and she scanned it under a UV light thingy and told me she couldn't accept it b/c it didn't have the vertical strip authenticator. (btw, i read this thread from 2 years ago, which has more discussion about this)
