In 1937 the river flooded from Pittsburgh to Cairo, Illinois leaving over a million homeless and claiming 385 lives. The Ohio River has not reached flood stage since cresting at 58 feet and closing the entire property in 2011, but is expected to continue to rise with melting snow upstream and rain in the forecast for today. Some roads along the river have been closed elsewhere due to minor flooding. The river was at 55 feet in New Albany on Monday. The hotel is not currently under water, but as the river rises it could make it difficult for first-responders to reach in case of an emergency. When it is forecast that the river will rise above 55.5 feet the general manager makes a decision to close the hotel for the safety of guests.
